Picture checks

Every picture is looked at in full size before it goes into a layout. One failed check rejects the picture; a new picture replaces it.

No text in the picture

No letters, numbers or logos anywhere in the picture, including house numbers, signs, labels and packaging. Headlines are set in OTTO Sans in the layout, and logos are placed from the original files.

Colour

• Functional colours stay functional. Error red, success green, warning orange and hint purple keep their meaning and never decorate.
• OTTO red stays close. The red in a picture stays within a colour difference of 8 (delta E) of OTTO red #EB001F.
• Exact colours come from the layout. Where a ground or a red must match exactly, such as type, logo and colour fields, the layout sets it, not the picture.

People

People are checked at full size: hands (five fingers, the thumb on the right side, fingers growing from the palm, a natural wrist), eyes, ears, teeth and glasses. One flaw rejects the picture.

Poses that keep hands simple, like crossed arms, hands in pockets or an open wave, work better than pointing or gripping.

Illustrations

Illustrations show one subject, no text, generic and metaphorical, in 8:3 and croppable to 4:3 (illustration guidelines). An existing official motif always comes first.
